summer-reading-txt

Here’s a chance for your kids to help you comment!

What have you read this summer so far?

What have been your favorite books? Which ones would you have rather left at the library?

On September 1, I will have a drawing for a $25 gift card to Borders. Starting today, every time you or your child reads a book, come to the comments section of this post, and tell us what book it was and how you liked it.

Then, on September 1, we’ll see who the winner is.

The more you read, the greater your chances will be, so have fun, and get reading!!!!

I just finished The Disappeared by Gloria Whelan. I have liked her previous stuff, and this was not her strongest piece, but it gave me a picture of history that I did not know about –people disappearing in the unstable Argentina governement of the ’70s. It was short and worth the read.

  2. Jen T says:

My 7 year old Ella just finished The Magic Tree House #10 Ghostown at Sundown. She is just getting into this series. She says “I thought it was really cool, and I liked the part about the ghost.”

  3. Jen T says:

My name is Abigail. I am 11, and I just finished a great book called,”The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins. It is a great science fiction book with lots of action. It’s not an ” everyone lived happily ever after” book, but it is one that you can’t put down until you finish it. It’s definently worth the read.

  4. Jen T says:

I am Olivia, and I am 9. I just read Scat by Carl Hiaasen. It was exciting and about a boy who saves an endangered cougar cub and stops an oil company that is destroying its home. It was really good!

  5. Michele Mc says:

No book report at this time, but I wanted to comment to Jen T on “The Disappeared”. As soon as I read your comment, it put me in mind of one of my favorite Sting songs, “They Dance Alone”. It’s about that very ‘event’ and the people’s only way of protest for their missing relatives. It’s absolutely beautiful and haunting. Check it out, if you can.

One day we’ll dance on their graves
One day we’ll sing our freedom
One day we’ll laugh in our joy
    And we’ll dance…..

  6. April says:

we’ve read “Igraine the Brave”by Corneila Funke, it was a little wordy. “Where I live”by Eileen Spinelli which is a story through poems, so good! “Ida B”by Katherine Hannigan a little sad cause the Mom has cancer, but a good book!”Magyk”by Angie Sage good till the end, which could have been better. “Cinderella(as if you didn’t already know)”by Barbara Ensor fun retelling of a classic.”Corby Flood”by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell wordy but cute.”Love that Dog”by Sharon Creech fun quick read.”Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”by J.K.Rowling my 11 year old was just feeling brave enough to know the end!Plus he’s not allowed to see the movies till he reads the books which was a good incentive to read them all.”Amulet book 1, The Stone Keeper”by Kazu Kibuishi this is a graphic novel my 11 year old loves them. Last but not least “Junie B Jones is not a crook”by Barbara Park Which may seem like alot but we have three readers and a lot of rain here in Massachusetts.

  7. Fred Donaldson says:

A couple of my favorite summer reads as a kid were The Great Brain series and the Lord of the Rings Trilogy (which I was told was actually written as a single book and then subsequently split into three). I also liked Encyclopedia Brown and Mad Scientist Club books.

  8. Michelle Powell says:

Just read “Wild Orchid” by Cameron Dokey in the Once Upon a Time Series. Her retelling of the Ballad of Mulan. Good, fast, fun read.

Spencer, my 5 year old, loved “Piggie Pie” and “Zoom Broom” by Margie Palatini about a wacky witch with a bad temper.

  9. Tirzah says:

Just finished “The Quiet Room” about a girl who develops schizophrenia the summer before her senior year of high school and her fight into and out that horrible mental illness. How would you like to have a broken brain? Non-fiction…fast read, compelling, sad, rough language.

  10. Connie (the write one) says:

I just finished writing a book. Does that count?

  11. Stuart says:

I have to say The Battle of the Labyrinth By Rick Riordan. It was interesting and GOOOOOD!

  12. Jen T says:

I am Olivia, age 9, and I just read “How I saved my Father’s life and ruined everything else” by Ann Hood. It was exciting, but it was a little too religous for my tastes, but it is a pretty good book.

  13. Jen T says:

My daughter Ella, age 7, is working her way thought the Magic Tree House books, and just finished #11 Lions at Lunchtime. She said “It takes them to Africa and the lions are really cool!”

  14. Jen T says:

Abigail here! I just finished a book called, “The Princess and the Hound” by Mete Ivie Harrison. It is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast, but in this book the beast is a girl. I thought it was a very good book, but the story got a little confusing at times. If you’re looking for an adventure with a slight bit of romance, this book would be worth considering.

  15. Connie (the write one) says:

I just finished “The Zombie Survival Guide,” and I now feel more prepared to deal with the zombie menace to come.

  16. Jen T says:

Abigail here again! I’m 11 and just finished a book called “Tuck Everlasting” by Natalie Babbit. It is a short and interesting book about friendship and courage.

  17. Jen T says:

I just finished the 3rd book in the Dragon Slippers set by Jessica Day George. It is called Dragon Spear. The second is called Dragon Flight. I really have enjoyed all 3 of these. They are quick reads, and make great read-alouds. Check them out!

  18. marina says:

My dottie and I just read this beautiful book titled when the World was made…about Creation

  19. Just finished writing a zombie story and reading “The Living Dead,” which is short stories about Zombies. Are you sensing a theme?

To provide some balance in my life, Grant and I are studying the book of James.

  20. Jen T says:

Just finished The Magician: The secret life of the imortal Nicoholas Flamel. It is the second in the Flamel series by Irishman Michael Scott. It is rich in folklore/mythology, and a really good read. Check out the first and then read the second, and wait patiently for the third to come out!

  21. Shelley Fleming says:

I am a mom of three and a 7th grade English teacher. In an effort to find books that the boys will like (always difficult!), I have been reading Mike Lupica. My 13-year-old baseball-playing son LOVED Heat and The Big Field. From an English teacher’s perspective, they are well written and just nuanced enough for teens to stay interested. From a mom’s perspective, it was nice to not have to fight over summer reading!

  22. Jen T says:

I just finished The Wednesday Wars by Gary D Schmidt, and I think this was by far my favorite read this summer. My husband and 11 year old daughter also read it, and we all LOVED it! It is laugh-out-loud funny! The life of a 7th grade boy during the Vietnam war and how his teacher who “Hates” him makes just him read Shakespeare–heaven forbid! It is just great! It won the Newbery honor, but I think it should have won the medal. Check it out and prepare to laugh!

  23. rikki says:

my 2 year old and i have read several books this summer. one of his favorites is “A Car’s Life” which shows the “life” of a car, from it’s construction to being recycled into a new one. he can’t get enough of it!

  24. Rachel S. says:

I recommend “When I was King” by Linda Ashman. This was a cute picture book about sibling rivalry and the arrival of a new baby. Both of my kids enjoyed this story. It was fun to read to them because the words have a nice rhythm and you can really put emotion into reading it. It’s my favorite library find all summer!

  25. Amber says:

I have been reading all summer but I haven’t been posting about it. Here is my list:
The Invisible Wall by Harry Bernstein
    1984 by George Orwell
Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame
    Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen
    David Copperfield by Charles Dickens
and Bath Tangle by Georgette Heyer

I love reading classics! I didn’t like 1984 even though many people like it. I could have gone without reading it. I really enjoyed David Copperfield. I just love how Dickens writes. I enjoyed Northanger Abbey much more the second time through and am glad I gave it another shot. I enjoyed reading Wind in the Willows too because I had watched movies about it when I was younger but hadn’t read the book.

My daughter has just started reading and some of her favorites from this summer are: Fox in Socks, Bears on Wheels, Dr. Suess’ ABC book, and The Little Engine that Could.

  26. I just found this site today. We’ve been reading up a storm! Aidan is 16 months old and loves I Love You Through and Through!

And also anything by Sandra Boynton!

  27. Andrew says:

Hi my name is Andrew and:

This summer I have finished many books including:
All Five Percy Jackson And The Olympians
    Diary of a Wimpy Kid 1, 2 and 3
A very wonderful book called Fablehaven. I have also read The 2nd, 3rd and 4th Fablehaven this summer. All summer I have been reading LOTS of series. I also completed the Teen Reading Program for the library, but I can not remember all ten books I read for that.

  28. Andrew says:

I have just finished a short chapter book story called the wounded wolf. That was a wonderful one!

  29. Cecily says:

I wish that I’d been checking in more often. We’ve had a summer of the Boxcar children. We’ve read/listened to a number of mysteries where Benny, Henry, Violet, and Jessie solve all the problems in a small village.

  30. Cecily says:

We also just got some new Spanish books (from Spain). Our favorite is about a boy named Matias who needs to go pee but is afraid of the reyes magos catching him out of bed on the night of los reyes. My 5 year old collapses in laughter each time we read and look at the pictures.

  31. Cecily says:

We also got A Birthday for Frances and have been reading that over and over again.

  32. Cecily says:

I’ve been reading as well. I’ve read some Agatha Christie, some new recipe books, gardening books, and some new books. My husband brought home My Name is Memory, a book that has to have a series in mind. I read The Help. I’ve got Persuasion coming up later this month.
