book review: splat the cat

Our new favorite picture book around here was a Christmas gift to my son. Splat the Cat, by Rob Scotton, is about a kitty who overcomes his fears on his first day of cat school. With brilliant and funny illustrations, it is the kind of golden children’s book that families will want to read again and again.

But in case you’re still not convinced, this is what my son had to say:

me: Tell me about Splat the Cat.

CKR: Um, he rides a silly looking bike.

me: Why does he ride a silly looking bike?

CKR: Because it’s an old fashioned book.

me: What’s the book about?

CKR: He’s kinda scared to go to school.

me: What kind of school does he go to?

CKR: It’s a cat school.

me: Who is he friends with?

CKR: Everybody in the class.

me: Who else?

CKR: He’s friends with a mouse.

me: Isn’t that kind of silly?

CKR: Yeah, because cats are supposed to chase mice.

me: Tell me more about the book.

CKR: Uh, that’s all.

me: Do you like the book?

CKR: Yeah.

me: Do you think other people should buy the book?

CKR: Yes.

me: Why?

CKR: Because it’s a silly book.

Rob Scotton is one of our favorite authors ever. I adore his illustrations and stories. We love all the Splat the Cat books and also his Russell the Sheep books. If you haven’t read any of those you should check them out, they’re great!

      Isn’t it hilarious, Jen T?

We’ll have to pick up that story to read sometime! If you’re on the look-out for a fun new read, you should check out Eugene Trivizas’ “The three little wolves and the big bad pig.” That’s a nursery tale that even my husband enjoys reading to the kids!

    7. I am so excited that I found this site! Super fun!

      Thank you so much,
      Heather

We LOVE splat! Have you read the Valentine one? I am keeping that one long after the kids have grown… I’ve made fuzzy Splat finger puppets but keep giving them away before I get them photographed. Will get try this weekennd… super easy from felt and fuzzy trim.

    9. We haven’t read that one, Cheryl. I will go and look for it. When you make the puppets, though, make sure you post a link to your blog—we’d love to see it!
