banana bread protein shake

It is now two weeks after New Years, and I think we can safely say the holidays are over. I tend to come up with an excuse every day in January that conveniently pushes back the end of the holidays and my resolution to eat healthy and get fit. But it is best to ease into things, right?

This is a recipe I came up with ages ago, actually, and have wanted to share it with you. Julie helped me come up with the idea when she told me about a similar smoothie she makes for her kids that has bananas and oatmeal in it. It sounded like the ingredients you would put into banana bread, so I added walnuts to the recipe, and dates as the sweetener.

My friend Jon filmed and directed me in a little video where I show you how to make it:

What do you think? Go ahead, be honest.

And here is that recipe.

banana bread protein shake

8-10 ounces warm water
2 dates, pitted
1/4 cup oatmeal
1 scoop protein powder (I use raw, vegan protein powder, but you can use whatever you want, or just leave it out.)
1/4 cup raw walnuts
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 ripe banana
1 cup ice cubes

1. Combine all ingredients except for ice in a blender until very smooth.

2. Add in ice cubes and blend until ice is completely crushed and mixture is smooth.

I expected you to say, “It’s a good thing” at the end.

what brand/flavor of protein powder do you use?

I have yet to find a protein powder that doesn’t taste musty, chalky and generally icky (with some artificial flavor for extra ick) so I use greek yogurt in my smoothies but I know I definitely need more protein as I continue weight training.

    3. Stee-Thank you for asking! I use the Garden of Life brand of the Raw Vegan unflavored protein powder. I would also recommend using the Vega brand. When it’s blended up well enough, it doesn’t taste that chalky. I actually developed this recipe just so that my protein powder wouldn’t taste so bad. If you want it to be masked a little more, you can add a tablespoon of cocoa powder.

For what it is worth–i have found that soaking the protein powder in whatever liquid you are using for a little while helps to get rid of the chalkiness.

    11. Chelsea–I know, protein powder can be kind of gross. But this recipe seems to hide any chalkiness!
