These are the classic magic bars my mom used to make with a recipe she got from a can of condensed milk (I think it was Borden’s brand). With the graham crackers and chocolate, it always seemed obvious to vary the recipe to be like s’mores by replacing the coconut with mini marshmallows. But I’ll warn you — they’re very sweet. I usually make half the pan with 1 cup of marshmallows (which the kids prefer), and the other half of the pan with 1 cup of coconut (for the grown-ups).
magic s’mores bars
10 ounces (300g) graham crackers (18 whole crackers, or two cellophane wrapped stacks)
1 1/2 sticks (12 tablespoons) unsalted butter, melted
1 pinch of kosher salt
1 14 ounce can (400g) sweetened condensed milk
1 1/2 cups (250g) semisweet chocolate chips
2 cups (I have no idea how much they weigh—just throw a couple of handfuls on!) mini marshmallows
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees (180 degrees Celsius). In a large resealable bag (or in a food processor), smash graham crackers until finely ground. Stir in melted butter and salt. Press into a 13×9″ pan. Bake for 5 minutes. Remove from oven.
2. Sprinkle on chocolate chips. Drizzle can of condensed milk over graham crackers; follow with marshmallows.
3. Bake for 20 minutes more, until marshmallows are lightly browned. Let cool completely. I usually put mine in the freezer to make it go faster.
So guess who gets to bake for a bake sale?? Just found out Jay’s cub scout pack is having a bake sale this month. What great timing! I’m going to make these smores bars cause they look the yummiest to me! Hopefully they’ll come out as pretty as your pictures.
Thanks Jaime, if it wasn’t for your lovely blog I’d be whipping up a boxed brownie mix.
We are having this for FHE tonight. They look great and smell even better (I switched out simi-sweet chips for milk chocolate because that is what I had). I couldn’t wait to taste them so I tried a little YUM! It was good.
I am making these for FHE tonight also. YUM! Thanks for the recipe.
Made these tonight SO yummy!!! Thanks for the recipe!
I just popped another batch in the oven – Second time this week I used this recipe — TFS:)
ohhh these look yummy! i’ll have to make these with some leftover marshmallows i have!
Another awesome photo of yours that bought me back to your blog! Looks delicious!
This recipe was most disappointing. When you put the word magic in front of a baked good it should contain weed, and lots of it, no exceptions.
These are really good if you use marijuana butter in the recipe, they will get you baked out of your skull
Unfortunately Peter, not all bake sales are in Oregon, where such a recipe as you describe might actually be legal for a bake sale fundraiser.
I second what Josh says to Peter AND to Sam.
As I don’t know what Graham crackers are (don’t think we have them in England) I shall replace them with digestive biscuits! I can’t wait to try the recipe……they look absolutely delicious. Thank you xx
Just tried them last night and they are yummy! Thanks for sharing the recipe!
Those look soooo yummy. I love anything with condensed milk in it.
Will common salt do? Pic is mouth watering
Table salt will work fine, but since it has more surface area than kosher salt or coarse salt, you won’t need quite as much. Just use a smaller pinch, or, if you are using salted butter, just leave it out altogether.
Oh they look so delicious.
Seriously good and very easy too. I am going to need to make some of these very soon but will have to scale down the amounts else I’ll just eat them all!
Looks scrumptious! I’m going to try this this coming weekend!!! =D
i had smores on a camping trip a few weeks ago. this post really made me smile. i’m going to have to try these very soon!
They look delicious, and the instructions appear easy enough. I love the colors on your blog!
Yummmmmmmm. These look fantastic and on top of that are easy. Who could ask for more. Thanks for posting this recipe.
This makes me more excited than you know! My mom and I are HUGE chocoholics (we’re from Hershey, Pennsylvania) and are planning on making this when she comes to visit in a few weeks. Thank you!
Tried these tonight and although they are still delicious, don’t look nearly as pretty as the picture. I think they got a little overcooked. I live at high altitude; if I tried them again, would anyone suggest lowering the heat level or the time cooked… which one? Anyone else have this problem.
I’m at high altitude, too. And I think I even cooked mine for longer. The brown on top of the marshmallows in the picture is actually a drizzle of condensed milk, and the marshmallows never even turned brown. Apparently I need to test my oven temperature, because a couple people have written in about the same problem you had. You might want to also try putting them in the lower half of the oven so that the bottom will get cooked faster than the top. Also, check on them about five minutes before the recipe says. Opening the oven door a few times for this recipe will be just fine.
[...] MAGIC S’MORES BARS bake sale week: magic s’mores bars [...]
The original is Magic Cookie Bars with Eagle Brand Milk… my grandma used to make them for me when I was little!
You can find the original recipe here…

I used to work for Joe Muggs/Books-a-Million and we carried a similar product from Edgar’s Bakery that they called Rocky Road Bars–but they had the coconut and the marshmallows.
i tried, really i did, but they just turned into a big mushy mess. still good, but needed a spoon to eat them. perhaps i need to lower the temp, as i had to take them out 10mins early cuz the marshmallows were turning much too brown.
I’m so sorry that the marshmallows toasted too quickly, and that they ended up mushy. Sometimes mine end up a bit mushy, too. If I use real butter, though, and put them in the fridge or freezer for awhile, that usually helps.
These are definitely sweet! I suggest using salted butter to balance out the sheer amount of sweetness from the other ingredients. I did drizzle a bit of condensed milk on top of the marshmallows and it gave the top a nice golden brown pattern.
this looks so good! i must try them at once<3
I wonder if you could use marshmallow creme instead of marshmallows? It might do better in high altitudes.
They look so amazing! I think I’m going to have a go at making them tonight.
These look awesome! I will let you know when these win our neighborhood cookie exchange contest!
Thanks for the recipe
They look great!

hey, what’s magic about these?
I was expecting something a bit more…high inducing.
Graham crackers are indeed digestive biscuits ( sort of) my moms is californian, but has lived here (UK) since ’67. I will try these, altho they look a little sweet.
for magic try mushrooms, I won’t thanks, but know people who do.
Hey, everybody! I just made these again for my family, and they came out really gooey, and Oh. My Goodness. I think I liked them better that way. To get that consistency, just skip the cooling step and eat out of the pan with a spoon like kait said. It was rivers of marshmallowy goodness!!! Rivers!
[...] Then, I pick a few moments here and there to eat great, delicious, crave-worthy food (like s’mores bars, or tres leches cake with chocolate ganache, or lemon cloud cupcakes. Mmmmm…..). It [...]
